The path is relative to the root and must contain a trailing slash "/".

When search engines crawl a site, they first look for the file robots.txt in the domain root. If detected, they read the list of file directives to see which directories and files are blocked from scanning. You can create this file using our file generator robots.txt. When you use the generator robots.txt, Google and other search engines can determine which should exclude pages from your site and which should not. In other words, the file created by the generator robots.txt is similar to the opposite of a sitemap, which indicates which pages to include.

Robots.txt file tells the search engine which subpages of your site should be indexed and which should not.

  • Batch settings for all commands in the generator
  • Robots.txt, you can create both text and a file
  • All major search robots are available

Configuring parameters in the generator

The generator makes your work easier by requesting all the essential information. Below is a step-by-step guide to using the generator robots.txt:

  1. Spiders can be wholly excluded or even allowed (recommended) in the first field. If you prohibit all search robots from indexing your site, all other areas in the generator will become redundant.
  2. Select whether there should be a scan delay. If this is the case, the corresponding crawler can only visit your site every 5, 10, 20, 60, or 120 seconds.
  3. In the third field, enter the XML sitemap. If your site doesn't have a sitemap, leave this field blank or create an XML sitemap using our free XML sitemap generator.
  4. The generator provides you with a list of all standard search engines. If you are only interested in specific search engines, you can allow or deny access to them individually.
  5. Finally, specify all pages and folders that should not be indexed. Make sure each path has its field and ends with a slash. If you notice that you have made a mistake or want to do something different, you can change your entries in the generator at any time at robots.txt. A blue button at the bottom also says Reset so that you can start over any time.

Create a file for free

After you enter all the information in the tool, the generator will create a robots.txt file. You can choose one of two options:

  1. After clicking on the button labeled "generate," a file is created in the white field below the robotos.txt button. You can view, view, and copy the file there.
  2. Click on the red button that says "Create and Save as robots.txt," which leads to the same result. However, you will also receive a ready-made file that you can save directly to your hard drive.

Robots.txt storage in the root directory via your FTP

After creating the robots.txt file, you must implement it, and this is usually very simple: save the file as robots.txt and upload it via an FTP server or Hosting service to the domain's root directory.

Once this is done, each scanner must first interpret this file, which tells whether it can visit and index your site or individual subpages. If you have any questions or problems with storage robots.txt, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions about the file robots.txt:

What do you need for robots.txt?

Robots.txt file is used to control the behavior of search engine robots. If, for example, you don't want bots to have access to a specific subpage, this subpage is blocked for robots via a file robots.txt with the "Prohibit" command.

Where can I find the robots.txt file?

The robots.txt file is located at the first level of your site's tree. You can access the file by typing www.yoursite.com/robot.txt go to the browser's address bar. You can find the file via FTP access from your server.

Can you create a robots.txt file on your own?

Yes. Using our free robots.txt generator, you can easily create and configure the file.

How do I check if the file is configured correctly?

You can check this by looking at all the sites mentioned in the robots.txt file. Here it would be best if you decided whether you could include the corresponding page in the index. It would be best if you listed all pages on your site in the "Allow" section, and only those areas of your page that are not allowed in the index should be listed in the "Prohibit" section.

Is the robots.txt file mandatory?

No robots.txt file is optional, but it offers some advantages in terms of search engine optimization.

Why should the XML sitemap be in the file robots.txt?

When calling up your site, the search engine always comes across the robots.txt file first. If you saved your sitemap.xml file there, there is a high probability that your page will be indexed without errors.
